Image caption
FMC00.687 shows a selection of artwork by a.o. Arnold Böcklin, William Blake and Odilon Redon depicting Man's physical body, soul and angel in context of the soul leaving the body at the moment of death of the physical body, or during out of body experiences (OBE) such as e.g. during near death experiences (NDE).
Note, the Pietà by Arnold Bocklin (KRI 43) is known to have made a "particularly strong impression" on Rudolf Steiner at an art exhibition in Vienna in 1888 and inspired him "to engage with ideas about painting in a lasting way" (1913-02-04-GA250). As Hella Wiesberger wrote "this question accompanied him throughout his life, ever since he saw [these paintings] by [...] Arnold Böcklin for the first time" (1990 in GA291A)
